Candidates need to be able to deliver on promises
THE next Southern Downs Regional Council election is shaping as one of the more interesting since local government amalgamations.
The council has copped plenty of criticism in recent times mainly due to its financial struggles and the hit ratepayers have taken as it attempts to correct its bottom-line.
Today the Warwick Daily News has an interview with the first candidate for the March 2016 election.
Adam Colrain has a long association with local government, including as manager of Southern Downs Regional Council.
Mr Colrain has a long list of goals and highlighted many areas where he believes he can do better than current councillors.
That includes the obvious - improving economic development on the Southern Downs and getting council's finances back on track.
Mr Colrain won't be alone.
There will be many who come forward claiming they can do a better job than the current council.
However, they need to be wary of the promises they make.
Bringing together several small councils into a large regional council was never going to be easy.
This shows in the financial strife that Southern Downs Regional Council has found itself in recently.
Whoever puts their hand up for a position on the council needs to be willing to work hard to make positive change for ratepayers.
Making promises is one thing - delivering on those promises is something completely different.
