Canoe water polo delights pupils during fun day

THERE was plenty of joy on the faces of students from Warwick State High School's Mt Gordon Flexi-Campus as they took to the pools at WIRAC, but they certainly weren't there to swim.

The small group of students was treated to a day of canoeing and water polo on Thursday as part of a joint initiative between Headspace Warwick and the R U OK suicide prevention group.

R U OK's Johnno Felton, who organised the activity, said it gave the youths a chance to have a bit of fun.

"We like to give them a break from school and give them a day here - cheer them up a bit," he said.

While it was slow going to start with as the students learnt the ins and outs of their canoes, the action soon got started as they paddled around the pool.

"They were all hyper once they got going," Mr Felton said.

The service is one of many that Headspace provides for Mt Gordon campus students, according to Headspace manager Sophie McLucas.

"It's something different for them - we go out to the school and provide support," she said.

"It's about providing activities as they need them and giving them exposure to different activities."

The afternoon of fun also included a barbecue and some beach volleyball.
