Capacity field at shoot
GREG Roulston was the best performed Warwick shooter at the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia International Rimfire Benchrest shoot at Risdon Range at the weekend.
Roulston was sixth overall behind winner John Platzwald, of Gowrie Junction.
Platzwald scored 1479.74 out of a possible 1500. Roulston scored 1467.71.
Coffs Harbour shooter Sally Bates travelled to Warwick to compete in her second competition after losing a leg to cancer.
SSAA Warwick branch benchrest captain Steven Kasper said it was an inspiration to watch Bates shoot.
"She has set a good example for other shooters and does everything for herself," Kasper said. Bates scored 1376.29 during the two days of competition.
Kasper said the wet and windy conditions on Saturday made shooting difficult and resulted in lower scores.
"This is probably the best state shoot I have been involved with in the past 10 years," Kasper said.
"Everyone who came couldn't thank us enough and want to come to the next one.
"They love the town and what it has to offer."
The Warwick branch has hosted state championships each year for the past decade.
"We had a capacity field of 40," Kasper said.
The next major shoot at the SSAA range is the South-east Queensland Zone 2 Benchrest Titles at Risdon in August. Kasper said a tentative date had been set but was yet to be ratified.
The SSAA holds a different class of shoot each week.
This Sunday, the branch has a field rifle event from 8am at Risdon Range.
Anyone interested in joining can turn up on Sunday and ask for president Mal Smith.
