Captain helps out with a spot of coaching
PAUL Bourke captained Maryvale Condamine for nine seasons to the mid 2000s before taking a break and is back at the helm for the 2017-2018 season.
While Warwick Cricket Association teams don't have official coaches, the captains play part of the role.
Bourke has many memorable moments in cricket but few better the century partnership he shared with Chris Glasgow to help Warwick beat Central Downs in a Mitchell Shield final at Millmerran in the early 2000s.
He might just have to find the premiership trophy to check but reckons he has had four or five premiership wins as Maryvale captain.
He shares some of his views on leadership and coaching:
I tell each player to give their all and like to encourage teammates as much as possible.
No one tries to drop a catch but everyone drops them, you just think about catching the next one. The key for young players going into A grade is to try hard, that is half the battle.
Sometimes you give a player an odd tip but mostly batting techniques have been moulded by the time they get to seniors.
I try to work out the batsmen and talk to our bowlers about the best areas to bowl. It has been hard down the years to set a field to players like Rod Wilton, Darren Small and John Cleary.
