Captain Joyce reflects on the legacy of Anzac spirit

CAPTAIN Russell Joyce of "A" company 25/49 RQR gave a moving speech at the Warwick Remembrance Day Service yesterday.

Capt Joyce quoted Governor-General Peter Cosgrove in describing the essence of the Anzac spirit.

"Besides survival of our fundamental freedom, servicemen and women are bonded together in a sense of mateship, a sense of doing the right thing," Capt Joyce said.

"That spirit highlights and encourages the concepts of duty, selflessness, loyalty up and down, courage, humour, sharing and indeed a sense of spirituality.

"Because in war, most men and women stand at some time close to their maker," he said

Capt Joyce, who has lived in Warwick for nearly six years, said he gained many skills from his training with the army reserve.

"Self-confidence, management, decision- making and problem-solving skills," he said.

"As well as the ability to make good judgments based on what is in front of you."

Employed as a detective, Capt Joyce said those army skills often crossed over to assist in his police work.

Capt Joyce said he had also gained great friendships, as well as networks with community members and businesses, through his involvement with the army reserve.
