TWO Toowoomba residents using the city's newest car park have praised Toowoomba Regional Council for the timely opening of the Julia St facility.

The council opened 120 parking spaces to the public yesterday, just in time for the busy Christmas period.

Motorist James Hogan said the timing was perfect.

"This is the time of year when we need more parks than ever," he said.

"Everyone is about to start their Christmas shopping."

He said the Julia St car park was in a good position.

"It will be good for day events at the Empire Theatre and for people going to the law courts and Queens Park.

"Usually all the parks on Hume St are taken.

"It's worth walking twice the distance for cheap parks," he said.

Toowoomba resident Cameron Boyd welcomed the news that the car park had opened.

"I sometimes have to do laps to find a park in this area," he said.

Council workers were still putting the finishing touches on the car park yesterday, painting white lines in the entry and exit.

TRC Infrastructure Services Committee chairwoman Cr Carol Taylor said the council was pleased to ease car parking pressure by opening the new site off Hume St on the CBD's eastern fringe.

"Council expects to open the entire facility just before Christmas, weather permitting," she said.

"Fees will be $1.50 per hour to a maximum of $5 per day once the ticket machine is installed."
