Cardinal Cup cancelled due to wet footy ground

THE Redbacks have a month to prepare for the season opener against Highfields following the cancellation of the pre-season Cardinal Cup.

The cup was scheduled for Roddies Oval this weekend but transferred to Jimboomba due to the wet condition of the Warwick oval.

Redbacks president Keith Clarke said the ground at Jimboomba did not dry as well as expected so the cup carnival had to be cancelled.

The Cardinal Cup has been played on four occasions, with Jimboomba recording three wins and Warwick one.

Each participating centre - Warwick, Jimboomba, Lismore and Goondiwindi - has hosted the cup once.

A venue is yet to be decided for next year.

In the Darling Downs competition, two new teams, South Burnett Saints and Chinchilla, will take the total to 11.

Other teams are:

  • The Redbacks
  • Goondiwindi
  • Lockyer Valley
  • Dalby
  • Highfields

Toowoomba teams:

  • University
  • Tigers
  • South Toowoomba
  • Coolaroo

There will be an 18-week competition. All teams will play each other once but only some teams will meet for a second time this season.

The first Redbacks game will be against Highfields at Highfields on April 6, with Redbacks at home to Dalby on April 13.

The Anzac Cup game between the Redbacks and Saints will be held in Warwick on April 27.

Training for the Redbacks is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Roddies Oval from 5.45pm.

Due to the wet field, a lot of training is on the road and in the gym.
