IT ONLY took five minutes for kindness to catch on, but in that moment someone's day was made.

At the launch of a new community kindness project yesterday, one anonymous local heard the call and made a heart-warming donation.

With the passing on of a kindness card, the donor handed over a night's accommodation - near a hospital - to a woman with a relative who had cancer.

The simple act of selflessness embodied what Women of Warwick member Nicole Kane had in mind when she helped create the Southern Downs Kindness Project.

Using a kindness card, Warwick residents can perform a random act of generosity anonymously.

For Nicole the idea started with a chat with one of her close girlfriends.

"It was one of a hundred things we talked about in our catch-up," she said.

"We talked about random acts of kindness and paying it forward - she said to me 'Nic you've got to do it'."

Feeling inspired the Warwick woman decided to put the plan in motion.

As she watched a couple enjoy a meal at the Coffee Club, she took the first step.

"I paid for their bill," Nicole said. "I couldn't stop smiling.

"I walked out laughing. It really was so much fun."

Nicole decided to collaborate with a few groups including the Women of Warwick, Community Network of Warwick and CDS Stanthorpe, and the kindness project was formed.

A kindness card could be used for something as simple as paying for someone's coffee.

"Do something kind, use a kindness card and reuse and recycle," Nicole said.

"Big or small, your random act of kindness may make someone's day or make them smile."

The Kindness Cards are available at a number of businesses on the Southern Downs.
