CareFlight help dash gives spur for career
WHEN Mitchell Lewis saw his father airlifted to Brisbane Hospital by CareFlight helicopter, he decided then and there he would become one of that crew.
After graduating from Warwick High School in 2009, Mitchell enrolled in a Bachelor of Paramedic Science at QUT.
"I always liked health and thought being a paramedic would be pretty cool," Mitchell said.
"After my dad had a series of heart attacks and was flown from Warwick to Brisbane, I decided the goal was to work for CareFlight and so paramedics is the first stepping stone for that.
"CareFlight gave me the opportunity to have my dad for longer, so I want to do the same and give back to the community."
Mitchell was one of 25 students across Queensland awarded a two-year scholarship from Arrow Energy to go towards his studies.
He said the $10,000 Arrow Energy Indigenous Tertiary Scholarship made student living that little bit easier.
"As a student, every little bit helps," Mitchell said.
"There was no limit to what I could use it for, so I have just hoarded it for now, but if I get behind on rent or my motorbike loan, I can put some towards that.
"And I get a textbook allowance, which is really handy because my textbooks are expensive."
Mitchell is in the first of three years of study.
