Careful eco driving can save you hundreds on fuel

THE "saving money versus saving the environment" debate can be a polarising one.

While many of us want a greener environment, we will most likely opt for having more cash in our pockets. Let's face it: the folding green stuff isn't easy to come by these days, right?

But it is possible to save money, the environment, and even reduce your stress behind the wheel by using RACQ's EcoDrive online tool.

With a time investment of just 15 minutes, the EcoDrive learning tool (racq.com/ecodrive) will save you $100 on your annual fuel bill and reduce your carbon footprint by 150kg each year.

Now I can hear you thinking, how can an online tool save me money and save trees?

EcoDrive's effectiveness was proven last year when RACQ conducted a 12-month research study of more than 900 drivers across Queensland.

The average savings were those I've already mentioned. But it also found one in six drivers could save more than $350 annually and half a tonne (yep, that's right, half a tonne) in carbon emissions by putting those eco-driving techniques into action.

And the techniques are as simple as removing excess weight or accessories such as roof racks and spoilers from your car. You can see the full list of tips via the online tool.

But it's not just drivers and the environment that can reap the benefits from greener driving.

Real potential exists for companies and governments to make substantial savings on their fleet costs, as well as contribute to national energy security and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
