Carissa fundraises for lofty mission

AT JUST 16 years of age, Carissa Doherty is yet to step foot on a plane, let alone leave the country.

But come January, not only will she do that, but her plane will touch down in one of the most dangerous landing strips in the world: Kathmandu.

The Warwick State High School year 11 student has signed up for a mission with seven other teenagers from Queensland, organised by OM (Operation Mobilisation) Australia, which will see her travel around the poverty-stricken country of Nepal.

From January 3-20, the group will travel from one remote village to the next, spreading the message of God and Christianity in their travels.

Included in the itinerary is a three-day trek around the base of the Himalayas, which Carissa said would be one of the toughest parts.

"It will be winter then and we've been told to prepare for temperatures like Stanthorpe's winter," she said.

"That would be fine, except we won't have heaters and we have to carry everything in a back-pack. Mine's about the same height as me.

"They've told us we should buy a sleeping bag for negative temperatures.

Carissa said she hadn't trained for the trek, but said was planning a trip to Stanthorpe to spend a night in Girraween National Park.

Aside from landing in Kathmandu, Carissa said she couldn't wait for her adventure.

"You land in the mountains so it's one of the most dangerous in the world," she said.

"After I land I'll be able to relax. It's something I've never done before but I'm so excited.

"Experiencing the new cultures and seeing the views will be amazing."

With the air fares and cost of accommodation and food, the trip will cost $2100 and to help raise that, Carissa is holding a garage sale tomorrow with the help of family and friends.

"Dad has got some hay that will be for sale, as well as other farm items," she said.

"There will also be clothes, a cake stall, household items, a sausage sizzle and damper.

"I've had such great support from people - my friends and members of the Baptist Church have already given me $600, so hopefully I'll be able to reach $2100 this weekend."

The garage sale will be held at the Warwick Baptist Church tomorrow from 7am-1pm.
