Carlee has high hopes for medal

WARWICK athlete Carlee Beattie is amazed by the interest in the London Paralympics and can't wait to compete in her pet event, the long jump, early Monday, Australia time, in a packed stadium.

"The coverage in the papers and on TV here on the Paralympics is excellent; there is so much representation of the Paralympics and a lot of hype and media about the games," she said.

"Athletics is sold out so I can't wait to compete in front of a big crowd.

"The stadium looks great at night with the lights lighting up the Olympic colours.

"The village is a little smaller and more compact than Beijing but the food hall is great, facilities exceptional and volunteers wonderful."

She is the world record-holder for the F46 long jump at 5.89m and won silver at the 2011 world championships in Christchurch.

Beattie will compete in her second event, the T46 100m, in the middle of next week.

After her competition is over, Beattie plans to watch more of the athletics and cheer on team-mates in the finals.

She said while the village was a bit isolated from the London vibe, she was focussed and excited about her competition.

"The opening ceremony was amazing," she said.

Beattie's coach Brett Jones is happy with the preparation of his star long jumper.

"Carlee has a few little body niggles but all is progressing well," Jones said.

She was in camp in Cardiff, Wales, with the Australian team before the games for some in-house competitions.

"Carlee jumped well off her short approach and improved in each competition. She then moved up to her full run up, ran in very fast and progressed well with no injury concerns."

The F46 long jump is a straight final so each athlete will have six attempts.

Jones wants Beattie to get on the board (for a legal jump) in round 1 and then improve with each jump.

"Our strategy is to put the pressure on the other girls from the first jump," Jones said.

After her long jump, Beattie will focus on the 100m but won't compete in the 200m as it is scheduled before her best event, the long jump.

Jones doesn't have a form guide on Beattie for the 100m.

"Carlee is stronger and faster than ever but, due to focus on long jump, we have had no time to race and or prepare specifically for the 100m to the level we would have liked," Jones said.

Beattie's preparation was put back earlier this year due to injury but training for the long jump boosted her speed for the 100m, an event where she won bronze in last year's world championships.
