Carlton player joins Darling Downs team
CARLTON United football team will be represented by one of their players as part of the Darling Downs rep football teams for 2016.
Georgia Williams, who plays centre back, was selected during try outs to play for the U15 rep team, something she said she was not expecting.
“I was really surprised because I thought most of the girls that went from Stanthorpe would get in as well,” she said.
This is not the first time Georgia has played for the rep team, playing previously in Years 6 and 7 and trying out in Year 8.
It was a long selection process, Georgia said, with a lot of drills designed to test the players skills.
“They did the selection by, they first split us up into defenders, mid-fielders, attackers and then they split us off into groups,” Georgia said.
“There was a passing drill and a key possession drill, there was a 50/50 ball and then a passing drill.
“Then after that I think there were little games and then a big game after that.
“I think the big game was of possibles and probables, I’m not sure what the other ones were for because only half of us did it.”
The team trains every second Monday up until the competition and Georgia said she really enjoys the sessions.
“It’s pretty good, they really want to concentrate on fitness and stuff like that,” she said.
“We do shooting drills and we play a game and yeah, it was fun.”
Georgia’s mother, Vicki, is incredibly supportive of Georgia making the team along with other Stanthorpe players.
“It’s pretty good that kids from here make it,” Mrs Williams said.
“Sometimes it’s dominated by Toowoomba.”
The state competition for the team is being held in July, with the teams travelling to Maroochydore to play.
