Junior carnival attracts 700
FOOTBALL: It was fun for the juniors and a win for the Warwick Wolves in premier men's on the biggest week of football for the season.
Yesterday, almost 700 players were at Queens Park for the annual junior carnival.
"We played close to 150 games for the day," association vice-president Paul Butler said.
"Games were played on 11 fields, the 30 senior and junior referees did a fantastic job," Butler said.
In senior football on Saturday, the Wolves moved a step closer to a men's premier finals spot in Football Toowoomba with a 4-1 victory against USQ.
USQ went into the game third so the win was even sweeter for Warwick which, depending on other results, could move as high as third.
Joe Campbell scored two goals with Matt Carey and Sam McLennan scoring one each.
Coach Jon Pearson rated Cameron Davey and Joe Campbell as his best.
"Matt Carey and Sam McLennan combined really well up front," Pearson said.
In reserves, Warwick went down 6-3 with Kieran Power the best.
In yesterday's ladies game, Warwick went down 3-0 to the unbeaten Willowburn.
Coach Derek Kane said Shandell Doro and Laura Wyville were strong in centre field.
"Tish Kendall was outstanding in goals, stopping half a dozen shots. We had a few half chances to score," Kane said.
Warwick started the weekend on Friday night with a 3-0 win in colts against Highfields.
Will Gordon, Gift Lisie and Devon Cooper scored goals for the home team.
Coach Tony Cooper said the Warwick team dominated the whole match with Highfields only having 11 players.
"Warwick kept Highfields to only a couple of scoring shots all game and a great save by Alek Ebneter in the final minutes kept the away team to nil," Cooper said.
"It was a great game by all the boys."
