Cricket Carnival doubles as buck’s party for Chris

CRICKET: Chris Polkinghorne might live in Brisbane but will return to the town of his childhood for his buck's party.

He promises it will be a fun rather than a wild party.

There aren't any big night-time functions on - his 30 guests will play for the Rudder's XI in the annual Australia Day Cricket Carnival on January 23-24.

Chris played in last year's carnival with Annie's XI and decided a month ago a carnival cricket team was a great way to prepare for his April wedding.

He left Warwick in 2002 after playing a lot of sport on the Southern Downs.

Chris and brothers Greg and Adric all played cricket and football in Warwick, and some of them dabbled in tennis and squash.

"I'm a hopeless cricketer. If anything, I can bat better than I can bowl," he said.

"It won't be a wild buck's party, we will just have fun - everyone loves cricket."

Rudder's XI will be one of the teams in the social competition, which will be played for the first time.

They only claim one top cricketer and he's the brother of the bride-to-be.

Anthony Atkinson is a first-grade batsman for Western Suburbs in Brisbane, and according to Chris, it will more about the laugh than the winning for his star. "If we need to play serious, I am sure Ant will," he said.

Win or lose, Rudder's XI are set to stand out in "eye-piercing pink" clothing.

Rudder's XI are one of three new teams.

The late Adam Merrell will be remembered by his mates who have formed Muzza's Men, and Sam McLennan is the organiser of the Sons of Pitches team.

The 33 teams will be split into 11 pools. Three teams will play a round-robin (two games each) on their allocated ground on the Saturday and a new draw will be done for day two.

Competitive teams: Hulk's XI, Condy Sports, Dalrymple Dongers, Jonesy's XI, Bear's/Small's XI, Doc's XI, Scots PGC Past Students, Summers, Max's XI, Stunned Mullets, Dale's XI, Ring Ins, Lowe's XI, Goomeri Giants, Hugh's XI, Rettke's XI, Badzy's Bandits, Marbuck's XI, Blue Cow XI, SBH XI, Mitch's XI, WBAS, Rosewood Icemen, Mt Anything.

Social teams: Muzza's Men, Rudder's XI, Sons of Pitches, XXXX, Sel's XI, Annie's XI, Hurricane's Elite, Digglers, Palace Cows.

All welcome to Hawker Rd Function Centre on January 15 at 6.30pm.
