Carnival extended to take in two days
TY Gardner and Melanie Hagenbach were the inaugural winners of the 16/17 years 400m hurdles at the Warwick State High School Athletics Carnival at Hamilton Oval yesterday.
While the event has been part of regional and state school athletics for many years, 400m open hurdles and 200m hurdles for the younger age groups were contested for the first time at a Warwick High carnival yesterday.
Gardner said he won on the basis of his experience in sprint hurdles.
"Dan Nielsen is a better 400m runner, but I had the advantage of winning the sprint hurdles most years in school carnivals," he said.
Straight after the event, he wasn't saying much about his 400m hurdling future.
"Hurdles are just a bit of fun and 400m with the hurdles is just a killer," Gardner said.
Hagenbach gave a year in age to many of her opponents, but that didn't stop her winning the girl's event.
In recent years, the Warwick High carnival has been held over one day, with some events contested at lunchtimes in the weeks before the carnival. This year, the carnival has been extended to two full days, with the final day on July 26. While Hamilton house was strong in many of the relays, it was Barnes which came up trumps in the teachers and captains relay.
Barnes captains Ty Gardner and Emily Hoffman were joined by teachers Emma Keating and Caleb Kuhl in the winning team.
