Carnival fever begins with Assumption College students
SWIMMING: Assumption College students took to the stands and swimming lanes at WIRAC yesterday for the first carnival of the year.
Deputy principal Craig Frattini said the day ran smoothly and commended the students' participation.
"We have about 460 students this year, most of which are here," he said.
"We have about 400 students competing - more than last year.
"While we want to showcase the swimmers, the focus is on house spirit and participation."
Sport co-ordinator Julie Collins said participants could choose to either swim the 25m events, which counted towards house points, or 50m events to compete for age championships.
Three records were broken, all in the 12 years category.
McAuley House student Nella Ryan broke the 12-year-old girls 50m freestyle record, setting a new record of 36.5 seconds over last year's record of 38.31.
Nella also broke an Assumption record for 50m girls breaststroke.
She set a new record of 50.09 beating the previous record of 53.59.
Another McAuley House student, Chris Watt, added to the record-breaking results, setting a new time for the boys 50m butterfly.
The new record stands at 46.15 seconds, over the previous record of 47.04.
Rice House performed well, winning the relay and overall house trophies.
The next swimming carnival to take place is Warwick East State School on Tuesday, with Warwick State High School on Thursday at WIRAC.
Photographs and details of age champions and runners-up will be in a future edition of the Warwick Daily News, along with more competitor and spectator photos.
