Cars take to circuit that is Bill’s legacy
TRIBUTES flowed for Bill Campbell at Morgan Park at the weekend, as the Short Circuit Motorsport Association meeting was held at the raceway.
Members of the Short Circuit Motorsport Association paid tribute to Campbell by wearing black armbands, while one minute of silence was held in memory of the Warwick District Car Club president, who died last Wednesday.
Short Circuit Motorsport Association secretary Fred Berge, who knew Campbell for more than 40 years, said he was the brains behind Morgan Park Raceway.
"I met Bill when he was 18," Berge said.
"I was the secretary of the Short Circuit Motorsport Association and I spelt his name wrong so he came and told me.
"That's how I met him."
Berge said the thing that stood out about Campbell the most was his passion for motor racing.
"He was so dedicated to motor racing," he said.
"It's going to take Morgan Park Raceway a bit of time to recover.
"It will get sorted out and keep going but Bill is a huge loss.
"Without Bill, there is no way the precinct would have got to where it is."
Short Circuit Motorsport Association president Derek Pingel said Campbell's work had put Warwick on the motor racing map.
"There are not too many other clubs with the same complex," Pingel said.
"That has been driven by someone absolutely dedicated.
"He was here all the time.
"You have to admire someone for their legacy and I just pray Bill's legacy keeps the momentum going.
"The development here is at a pace I haven't seen."
Driver Keith Edwards, who drives from Gatton to Warwick regularly to race at the circuit, had nothing but praise for Campbell.
"He was very approachable and well-grounded," Edwards said.
"This complex is Bill.
"Any dealings I had with him were very professional and you always knew where you stood with him."
Edwards said Campbell was in everyone's thoughts throughout the weekend.
"As the chief steward at the drivers' briefing said 'Bill would be up there watching, making sure we have a smooth meeting'," he said.
"The track here is awesome.
"The best way to describe it is professional.
"It's very well organised and a lot of that is down to Bill."
