Casino all rounder on the way to Warwick for carnival
COACH'S CORNER: MAL Hancock has been coming to Warwick for more than two decades as part of the Ring-Inns team for the Australia Day Cricket Carnival.
The team from Casino has only missed one carnival when they couldn't get the weekend off from Casino A-grade commitments in the L.J. Hooker League in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales.
Hancock is now playing club cricket in the Casino competition and he talks about his role in the Ring-Inns team.
I first came to a Warwick carnival when your brother-in-law Warren Wright (who then lived at Allora) started the Ring-Inns team.
It was all family at the start including my brother Neil who played a couple of games of English county cricket and won carnival awards in Warwick.
I see myself as captain/organiser rather than a coach.
None of the Australia Day Cricket Carnival teams will have official coaches.
There is no point in telling some of our batsmen how to play a straight bat at the carnival as they don't listen to me.
I do try to help the young fellows out and make sure they enjoy the game.
We have two or three players, 16 or 17 year olds, coming this weekend. We try to have a couple of young players in our team each year.
See feature on the carnival in the Daily News on Friday.
