Cassilis beats Warwick in the Rose Bowl

POLOCROSSE: The star play of a Western Australian wearing the maroon colours of Cassilis proved too good for Warwick in yesterday's IOR Petroleum Rose Bowl final at Morgan Park.

Islay Young won the best horse and rider award and rode Rothwell Second Chance to win the Gross Wholesale Meats champion horse award on the Australian Stock Horse.

Warwick 1 qualified for the Rose Bowl final with a 19-18 victory against Tansey 1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Cassilis club travelled from the central west of New South Wales to easily beat Wandoan in the Rose Bowl semi-final, the last game on the main field before Saturday night's national squad games.

Young and Lauren Sibley from Western Australia were both part of the winning Cassilis team. Cassilis led throughout the game but Warwick fought back from a 18-8 deficit after four chukkas.

At the start of the fifth chukka, Warwick No.1 Cameron Shepherd scored four quick goals before Cassilis fought back to finish the chukka up 20-13.

Warwick won the last chukka by one but Cassilis had come to Warwick and conquered.

Young said it was an honour to win the major awards in a carnival of 82 teams. "The standard is really good in the Rose Bowl, Warwick is one of the best places to play in the world. Warwick had a good team in the final but we got the job done," he said.

Cunningham 1 won C-grade with Zac O'Leary best player. Jason Thornton from the host club was best player as Warwick 4 won G-grade. Zac Cochrane and Brooke Field won player awards as Warwick beat Gold Coast in B-grade mixed final.

Cunningham beat Warwick by one in junior A with Bree Thornton best player.
