WHAT do Las Vegas and St Joseph's Cathedral in Rockhampton have in common?

They were the only two places Blackwater couple Greg and Penelope Bush wanted to be married.

It was Greg's dream to be wed to his teenage sweetheart, Penelope Bazzo, in the stunning St Joseph's Cathedral.

It had become a place of significant moments in his life after he and his sister were baptised there.

"It was more sentimental for Greg and I've always thought it was a beautiful church," Penelope said.

But their plans were almost thwarted by renovations on the inside of the church.

So they created a Plan B, a wedding in the glitzy Las Vegas.

"If it wasn't there it was going to be Las Vegas," Penelope said.

Fortunately for family, friends, and the couple's hip pocket, renovations on the inside were completed and they were married on Monday.

The day was made even more special when the same priest who married Greg's parents, Gordon and Kathy, conducted the ceremony.

Father John Grace was also the priest who baptised Greg's sister so many years ago.

Penelope said despite their concerns when they saw the cathedral with scaffolding surrounding it the Friday beforehand, it turned out to be the perfect wedding day.

"It was a bit of a shock to the system," Penelope said.

"But we all ended up working it out. Everyone was great. There were no hiccups on the wedding day."

Penelope and Greg said they were happy to be wed in the most beautiful church in Rockhampton.

"We love the warmth of it," Penelope said.

From the elaborate stained-glass windows to the soft lighting and sentimental value the cathedral held for the pair, they agreed not even Las Vegas could beat St Joseph's.
