Catholic schools remain open during industrial action

CATHOLIC Schools in the Diocese of Toowoomba will remain open during proposed protected action being taken by some staff at some Catholic schools next week.

The proposed industrial action will be for two scheduled work stoppages.

The first will occur Wednesday next week for half an hour at the end of the school day from 2.45 - 3.15pm.

The second will be on Thursday for one hour at the end of the school day from 2.30 - 3.30pm.

Schools in the Toowoomba Diocesan area impacted by the industrial action being taken by members of the Independent Education Union are:

  • St Mary's School, Charleville
  • Mary MacKillop Catholic College, Highfields
  • St Maria Goretti School, Inglewood
  • St Joseph's School, Millmerran
  • St Patrick's Primary School, Mitchell
  • St Stephen's School, Pittsworth
  • St Joseph's School, Stanthorpe
  • Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, Toowoomba
  • Sacred Heart Primary School, Toowoomba
  • St Anthony's School, Toowoomba
  • St Saviour's Primary School, Toowoomba
  • St Thomas More's Primary School, Toowoomba
  • St Mary's School, Warwick
  • St Joseph's College, Toowoomba
  • St Mary's College, Toowoomba
  • St Saviour's College, Toowoomba
  • Youth and Community Learning Centre, Toowoomba
  • Assumption College, Warwick.

Catholic Education Office executive director John Borserio said that principals would advise parents in all schools via letter, email, school newsletters and websites of arrangements being made in their respective schools.

"Arrangements may vary from school to school. We are confident there will be sufficient supervision for students to minimise, as much as is possible, disruption to their learning" Mr Borserio said.

"We have wonderfully gifted and dedicated teachers, and we highly value and deeply appreciate the outstanding contribution they make to provide quality, faith-based education for each and every student enroled in Catholic schools.

"I am absolutely committed to ensuring that our teachers and all our staff in Catholic schools are justly and fairly remunerated for their professionalism and commitment. Over the last five months, we have been listening with great respect and negotiating with good faith with the Independent Education Union as they advocate on behalf of their members."

Catholic Education has offered teachers and staff a 2.5% wage increase, but the union has rejected this increase.

State school teachers have, from September 1 2015, received a 2.5% wage increase (pro-rata over the next 10 months).

"We believe that the 2.5% wage increase offer made by Catholic Education to staff is fair and responsible in the current economic climate," Mr Borserio said.

"It takes into consideration the capacity of families to pay school fees while at the same time appropriately recognising and rewarding staff for their professionalism and their significant and much appreciated contribution to the ministry of Catholic Education."
