Study says we're lazier than ever

WE'VE all felt like being a bit lazy at times, but alarming figures show we're lazier than ever and it's putting our lives at risk.

Queensland Health figures show only 56% of adults are doing enough physical activity.

Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift said lazier people could be putting themselves at risk of cancer.

"Evidence shows that physical activity is one of the keys to avoiding preventable cancer," Ms Clift said.

"It's vital that all Queenslanders get active and exercise daily for their short- and long-term health.

"We know that up to one third of all cancers are preventable through healthy diet and lifestyle.

"This means that simply by getting active, we can save many lives and prevent cancer-related deaths on the Sunshine Coast."

To top it off, the number of self-reported rates of diabetes has more than doubled since 1990, from 1.5% to 4.2% of Australians, with more than one million people having the illness.

The increase is due to higher rates of obesity, a key contributor to type two diabetes.

Between 1990 and 2009 the death rate for diabetes also has risen in Australia, from 19 deaths per 100,000 to 21.

This is due to a combination of the disease being more prevalent and low diagnosis.

Sunshine Coast communities are helping people get fit with campaigns such as the Healthy Eating, Activity and Lifestyle program.

Yesterday Bells Reach families welcomed another fitness-themed park to inspire residents to get active.

The park, on Indigo Rd, features facilities for exercise, socialising and playing.

Lana and Warren Bock were pleased with the fitness park.

"It's really good for the families here as most of the homes don't have backyards, so it's a good chance for kids to get out and get active," Mrs Bock said.

National physical activity guidelines recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most, but preferably, all days of the week.
