Cause for conflict at controversial council meeting

AN AUSTRALIA Day celebration held in Warwick would be a breakfast in the park, with no entertainment or markets.

That's the verdict in a report to be presented at a meeting of the Southern Downs Regional Council tomorrow.

The report recommends councillors vote to host Warwick's Australia Day celebrations at Glengallan Homestead.

According to the report, 53.68% of respondents to a council survey said they'd like to see Glengallan host Australia Day again.

The issue is among many contentious items likely to draw crowds of ratepayers to the public gallery at the meeting in Warwick.

In addition to the Australia Day venue, the issue of community lease fees is expected to divide councillors.

After being deferred at the past two meetings, the council is finally likely to make a decision about how much it will charge community groups for leases.

Three options will be considered by the council, the cheapest of which will see organisations pay $300 per year for a five or 10 year lease. As well as community groups, representatives from small communities are also expected at the meeting.

The council will consider proposals from the Maryvale and Leyburn communities.

The Maryvale Progress Association is asking for the council to support improving the Maryvale Cemetery, while the Leyburn community is asking for council to install signage pointing to historic sites. Decisions are also expected on a number of development applications, including a 34-lot residential subdivision behind Kahler's Oasis Caravan Park.

The meeting will begin at 9am, with members of the public invited to sit in the public gallery.
