Warwick CBD trader backs CCTV upgrade

THERE are now 75 sets of high definition eyes watching over the city and one Warwick businessman is hoping increased security cameras will help combat "hooliganism" in the CBD.

Mussels owner Fred Moncada said he "absolutely applauded" the Southern Downs Regional Council's decision to replace 26 CCTV cameras throughout the CBD with 75 new ones.

The upgrade cost $188,000 and was partially funded by the State Government, with the remainder covered in the 2013/14 council budget.

"I think I would have had more of a chance of finding out what happened to our business if we had those when it happened," he said.

"And if my gut feeling about what happened is right, the people might want to do it again.

"I am always worried about it, more so now since the break-in - I am very fearful and always have my heart in my mouth."

Mr Moncada believes there will be people who think the cameras are unnecessary, but he couldn't disagree more.

"We live in an age where we need them and it is a real shame we have to go to these lengths, but we have created the society where we need them," he said.

"I have seen instances of elderly people being abused by riff-raff and that shouldn't be happening.

"A huge part of the Warwick community is pensioners and we should be taking care of them and encouraging them to get out and not be trapped at home."

Fellow business owner Joe Coorey was not aware the cameras had been installed until contacted by the Daily News.

He said he too was supportive of the measures.

"I think it is a great thing for the town - the more security the better," he said.

"The only people who should be worried about it are the ones who have something to hide."

Southern Downs Mayor Peter Blundell said the new cameras were not intended to increase the coverage area, but the higher quality cameras meant that was the end result.

"Having CCTV cameras mean that we have a deterrent for crime as well as our community members having increased confidence in public safety," Cr Blundell said.

Areas covered by the cameras include between Victoria and Percy Sts, and Guy and Albion Sts.

Cameras are also installed in Leslie Park and public carparks in the CBD.
