CCTV footage of brutal attack on man played in court

SICKENING footage of a brutal attack on a man outside a Rockhampton nightclub was played in court yesterday, as police laid out their objection to bail for one of the alleged offenders.

Police prosector Constable Manon Barwick said the CCTV footage demonstrated the seriousness of the assault, which took place in the middle of William St last Wednesday night.

Ricky Neil Zizza, 18, appeared in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm in company.

Duty lawyer Matthew Heelan applied for bail on his client's behalf.

He said Zizza accepted his actions and the prosecution's strong case against him.

However, he argued the defendant had no criminal history and should be granted bail.

The court heard Zizza did not know the 41-year-old victim or the two women involved in the attack.

Mr Heelan said his client met the other man allegedly involved in the assault a number of times while out in the CBD.

"He never met him outside of the clubs," Mr Heelan said.

The court heard it is alleged the victim inappropriately touched one of the women inside the Flamingo's Nightclub and this motivated Zizza's co-accused to go after him.

Mr Heelan said his client, who was intoxicated at the time, stupidly went along with it.

"He has a young, impressionable mind," he said.

"This is an aberration from his otherwise good character."

However, Const Manon said Zizza had no fixed attachment to the community and was therefore a risk of failing to appear. There was a risk he could reoffend.

"He clearly can't control his consumption of liquor," she said.

Magistrate Barry Cosgrove said he was not satisfied these risks could be managed.

Bail was refused and the matter adjourned to May 15.
