Central Downs wins first up in league carnival at Clifton

RUGBY LEAGUE: Central Downs has started with a 22-18 win against South Burnett in round 1 of the Zone 5 under-35kg rugby league carnival at Clifton on Monday.

The carnival was officially opened by Cr Anne Glasheen, of Toowoomba Regional Council, on Sunday evening as a forerunner to the athletics carnival and five days of rugby league action.

The Central Downs team is coached by Ian Brady with Roy Nott manager and Doug Peardon the trainer.

Eli Costello scored two tries for Central Downs with Thomas Croft and Seth Esson scoring one each. Billy Peardon, Eli Costello and Atticus Sullivan landed goals.

In other round 1 games, Wynnum Manly beat Macintyre 26-6, Roma defeated Cunnamulla 22-20 and Western Downs drew 16-all with Balonne Barwon.

Charleville had the bye in the first round.

The carnival goes until Friday with a night of action on the greens at Clifton Bowls Club on Thursday.

Former Broncos player Jack Reed and Wynnum Manly five-eighth and 125-game NRL veteran Travis Burns are presenting the man of the match awards on day 1.
