Champ is back for some driving at Morgan Park

MOTORSPORT: Le Mans class winner Matt Campbell will return home to compete in the Historic Queensland race meeting on July 14-15 at Morgan Park.

Earlier this month, Campbell won the GTE-AM class with the Dempsey-Proton team in The 24 Hours of Le Mans, the most famous motor race in the world.

Campbell will drive his Datsun 1200 Coupe in group Nb as well as the ASP Formula 3 open wheeler in which he set class lap records at Morgan Park Raceway and Sydney Motorsport Park (Eastern Creek).

Historic Racing Car Club of Queensland vice president Peter Walsh said there were 280 nominations.

"I believe it is a record for circuit racing for any track in Queensland,” he said.

"There is a special promotion to celebrate 70 years of Holden, which has attracted Holden drivers from five states.”

A 48/215 Holden build in 1953, commonly known as the FX, and owned by Brisbane driver Steve Jeffs, will be in action in group N, the historic touring car class.

"I would expect Steve to reach speeds in excess of 160km/h on this track,” he said.

"All racing will be on the 3km track claimed by some as one of the most exciting tracks to drive in Australia.

"The track is challenging and rewarding at the same time with two straights, 12 corners and plenty of overtaking opportunities.”

Most of the drivers will arrive in Warwick on the Thursday afternoon or Friday morning before the weekend meeting.

"More than three quarters of the drivers will practise on the Friday with most drivers likely to get four sessions of 15 minutes each.”

Past Bathurst 1000 winner Dick Johnson will be in Warwick on the Saturday as a special guest.

Phil Brock, a younger brother of the late Peter Brock, will also be a guest of the HRCC along with 1965 Bathurst winner Bo Seton.

The oldest racer on the July 14-15 weekend will be 1966 Bathurst winner Bob Holden, who will race an ex-Bathurst Toyota Corolla. He is in his late 80s.

Holden is a regular at historic meetings in Warwick and has twice won the handicap races which is held on the Saturday afternoon.

All cars will have a qualifying session and four races over the July 14-15 weekend with a total of 50 events to be conducted from 8am to 4.30pm each day.

This weekend, there is super sprints action at Morgan Park.
