Champ makes a splash

JAMIE Lawson has driven in rally events with five-times Australian champion Ross Dunkerton.

On Thursday night, he will trade the passenger seat of a rally car for a microphone when he interviews Dunkerton at the Guns of Gravel Dinner at the City Golf Club in Toowoomba.

The rally driving legend is originally from Western Australia but was based in Malaysia for part of his 40-year career and now lives in Cairns.

Dunkerton is the winner of five Australian Rally Championships, two Asia Pacific Rally Championships and 37 international rallies.

He achieved international success, as well as surviving two major accidents and 19 rollovers, much of which he has in a book which will be for sale on the night.

Lawson is the road boss of the Great Endeavour Rally each year, a role he took over from his father Allan for the 11th annual rally in 1998.

"We have an average of four teams from Warwick in each rally," Lawson said.

Plenty of memories of on road and off road events at rallies will come flowing back when he also interviews his father at the dinner.

"Dad was one of the pioneers of rallying in Australia and brought a lot of ideas to the sport," he said.

"He helped put Australia on the world rallying stage and has driven in East Africa and Noumea."

The night will raise funds for the Endeavour Foundation and Downs Motorsport Club.
