Champion owner repeats victory at Stanthorpe Show
BILL Gross has repeated his record-breaking feat in the prime cattle competition at the Stanthorpe Show.
Mr Gross claimed his second consecutive Grand Champion beast title and capped it off with the beast selling for 346c/kg to Stanthorpe Quality Meats.
The price breaks Mr Gross's record from last year, when his previous Grand Champion went for 301c/kg.
The Risdon park feedlot owner was humble when learning of the win.
"It was excellent to win again," he said.
"We were very, very lucky to win."
The beast topped last year's 380kg steer with this year's champion weighing in at 410kg.
Mr Gross has been a constant supporter of the prime cattle competition and said he had lost count of his wins.
"I've been entering for 30 years," he said.
"I'm going to keep going."
Mr Gross was understandably pleased with the result of the auction.
"That's a pretty good result," he said.
Factors taken into consideration include adequate fat coverage, finishing, temperament and muscle definition.
Judge Pat McMahon said it was one of the best fields he'd ever seen.
"I'm very impressed with the quality of the cattle," he said.
"I've been here to judge to Stanthorpe quite a few times and (this is) probably the best showing of cattle since I've been coming here.
"It's was a very nice lot of cattle."
Mr McMahon said the region's producers deserved all the credit.
"The local exhibitors are to be congratulated on the job that they've done," he said.
"I thank them for the trouble they've gone to because it's not easy to present cattle in show quality and take the time to get them here and support the local show.
"It's really good to support the show in the community and they've hit the nail on the head today."
The Stanthorpe Show prime cattle committee said they were hoping to grow the competition next year.
Their priorities include an improvement of the cattle facilities at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds and increased sponsorship for future competitions.
