Champion takes the saddle in Campdraft Super Series

A LONG life working as a cattleman gives veteran campdrafter John Mulcahy an edge when it comes to competing, something that shows in his impressive trophy collection.

The 66-year-old from Roma is fresh off a few runs at Willinga Park, where champion campdrafter Pete Comiskey pocketed the first prize of $100,000.

Mr Mulcahy said he was keen to have a better showing at this weekend's inaugural Campdraft Super Series at the Warwick Showgrounds.

"I got some round money out of that one,” he said.

"I've nominated three horses for this event and I'll be keen to get through to that final.”

With nominations at $1000 a horse, the event was designed to attract the best campdrafters in the country.

Round winners will win $6000, with prizemoney being paid out down to 15th place.

The winner of the final will take home $25,000, and this will be decided from 3pm this afternoon.

Mr Mulcahy is no stranger to the winner's cheque.

After beginning his campdrafting career in 1976, his first open draft win came in 1987 when he won the Condamine Bell.

He went on to win the event another three times - in 2000, 2001 and 2017.

He also won the Chinchilla grandfather clock in 2000 and 2015.

"My biggest feat in the sport was winning the Australian Campdrafting Association Rider title in 1990,” he said.

"It was extra special because I did it all on horses I'd bred, broken in and trained myself.”

Mr Mulcahy said he loved the sport but was equally fond of the people he competed with.

"It's a great community of people, great friends and a lot of fun and good times.

"That's a large part of what keeps me coming back.”
