Chances for all to be involved in the Commonwealth Games
REGULAR readers of the Daily News have probably worked it out - I am a Commonwealth Games fanatic.
I do like winning and Australia does plenty of that at the Commonwealth Games.
As highlighted last week in the Daily News, the Queen's Baton will pass through Warwick on March 29 and nominations are now open on the games website.
Tickets for the games go on sale in April and from my experience with the Sydney Olympics, anyone keen to watch the swimming better get in early.
Southern Downs residents keen to get tickets are urged to sign up through the games website for information on tickets, one way of getting the edge when it comes to the rush for tickets.
The one area I don't have information on is accommodation although I believe booking at places like Canungra and Beaudesert is not a bad option considering the main stadium and many of the sports are at Carrara which is only 30 minutes from many of the area in the Scenic Rim.
If anyone is thinking about going to the Commonwealth Games, don't think, just do it. It will be a particularly memorable time for children.
Tickets are as cheap as $10 for children and $20 for adults and there are free events like cycling road races, triathlons and the marathons.
As for our area, there is a strong chance Allora pair Matthew Denny and Laura Geitz will be part of the Australian team.
Matthew has already won discus and hammer state championships this year and is much better than a 50/50 chance of being in the team.
Laura is not playing netball at present but if she chooses to return from family commitments and give Gold Coast a shot, the odds are also pretty strong she will be in the games.
As for medals, who knows. Matthew was the third best in Commonwealth in discus at the Rio Olympics and our netballers would almost be assured of a medal.
