TUESDAY TANTRUM with Gerard Walsh

THE competition year has started at the Warwick Horse Trials Club and some changes to the course have received the thumbs up from the riders.

There is a new committee at the club which has big plans for the sport in Warwick. They have bought portable cross country jumps so more of the action at major events will be in front of the clubhouse.

The two-star winner was Brett Cantle from Gympie on Premonition, an imported stallion owned by Lars and Madonna Hedberg.

The name Hedberg brought the obvious question from me, is he the Lars Hedberg who played rugby for Australia and coached rugby in Warwick?

Yes, it was and Saturday was the start of a new era in Warwick Water Rats rugby when the women played their first game of sevens in the black and white colours of Warwick.

Warwick beat Gatton in a women's game split in two, 14 minutes of play before and 14 minutes of play after the men's game. In the men's rugby union trial, the Warwick B-grade side went down to Gatton A grade. The crowd was up on a regular club men's game and included fans new to rugby who wanted to see the women's game.

In Aussie rules, the Redbacks headed to Highfields for the Cardinal Cup at the weekend. Hosts South Toowoomba beat Toowoomba Tigers in the final game of the carnival to win the title. Redbacks played some top footy with a side under-strength due to cricket and work commitments. Tyhe Clarkson won the medal for MVP for Warwick despite only playing on day one of the carnival.

The Cardinal Cup will be held in Warwick next year. There were also many good skills shown in the women's game.

In football, Warwick lost 3-0 in premier and also went down in reserves. Warwick colts had a convincing win on Friday night. Warwick plays USQ in a FFA Cup game tonight at USQ in Toowoomba at 7pm.
