Changes to AFL in region

THIS year sees AFL change its approach in the Warwick and Southern Downs region.

The Redbacks have introduced an in-season Auskick program, which introduces children from five years old to under 12 to the basic skills of catching, kicking and ball handling and the rules of AFL, while having fun.

The program is run by qualified Auskick co-ordinators, who help all kids no matter what ability they have in a safe and friendly environment.

After the first few weeks, the young Auskickers will be organised into teams to compete in a local competition.

Kids of the same age and ability will be put into zones where the emphasis is on being safe and having fun.

During the year, as the kids gain skills, other clubs will be invited to come to Warwick to play.

Redbacks are also running juniors from under 12 and up in the Darling Downs competition. During the season, at junior home games, Auskickers who want to come and try will be allowed to play in some of these matches.

Sign-on day is Saturday, February 20 between 8.30am and 10.30am at Mayhew oval on the corner of Weewondilla and Horsman roads.

All kids can come and try for free, to see if they’d like to play in the Auskick program.
