Chargers to play at Stanthorpe in Mustangs Challenge
RUGBY LEAGUE: Warwick and District will field a team in the Mustangs Under-12s Challenge in Stanthorpe this weekend.
Chargers coach Lee Schwenke said he was looking forward to the carnival, which will take place at Sullivan and Crisp Ovals today and tomorrow.
He said all seven teams in the Warwick and District JRL would be represented.
"Every club has got some players in the team,” he said.
Schwenke said eight teams from different regions would converge in Stanthorpe for the carnival.
He said his team had been training hard to prepare.
"We've had two trial games and we've had three training sessions,” he said.
He said rep players would face many more games in the under-13s and upwards.
"They play a lot of rep next year,” he said.
Stanthorpe Junior Rugby League president Lindsay Adams said rep teams were coming from as far as Roma.
He looked forward to the event being held in Stanthorpe.
"It's something that doesn't come up very often,” he said. "Definitely, it's a coup for us to get it.”
Warwick and District JRL secretary Rob Weaver said the carnival would allow the players to transition into international laws, which are used in the NRL.
"The point of the carnival is we're playing international laws,” Weaver said.
He said the under-12s had been playing modified laws until now, which exclude scrums and have some other points of difference.
The carnival will run from 9am to 4pm today and 9am to 1.15pm tomorrow.
Today's first game will see WDJRL Chargers compete against Toowoomba Sky. The Chargers will play Greenbank at 1pm today and South Burnett at 9am tomorrow. - Liana Turner
