Shooting of toddler "a very unfortunate accident", cops say

UPDATE 11.50am: A THREE-YEAR-OLD Morayfield girl remains in hospital after a "homemade improvised firearm" discharged and shot her in the leg at 11pm on Thursday night.

A Queensland Police Media spokesperson confirmed on Monday that no charges had been laid but said Grievous Bodily Harm would be "likely".

"They deem it to be a very unfortunate accident," she said.

Police learned the toddler had been shot after she was presented by relatives to Caboolture Hospital with a wound to her thigh at 11.30pm.

Police established a crime scene at a Morayfield address believed to be the toddler's home.

Forensic crews located and seized the firearm along with a number of other exhibits to assist with their investigations.

The three-year-old remains in Lady Cilento Hospital after undergoing surgery and is in a stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

9.30am: CHARGES have not yet been laid after a three-year-old girl sustained a gunshot wound to the right leg at Morayfield.

After being presented to the Caboolture Hospital by relatives about 11.30pm on Thursday, the three-year-old was transferred to the Lady Cilento Hospital in Brisbane.

There she is believed to have undergone surgery.

Police have seized what acting detective inspector Teena Rolls described as a "homemade improvised firearm" from a Morayfield residence.

Police believe several other children and three adults were present when the incident occurred. Investigations are continuinuing, with a number of relatives assisting police.
