'Charity' queried over money

A FOUNDATION using the Golinski name after the Tewantin fire tragedy will pass on only some of the money it raises to the family.

A Facebook page for the "Matt RWSS Golinski Foundation" and a linked support group, which has nearly 2000 members, have posted details for a Commonwealth Bank donations account called the "Matt RWSS Golinski Facebook Committee". Family and friends said yesterday that they knew nothing about the sites.

They called the credibility of the self-proclaimed non-profit organisation into question.

The pages encourage mourners to donate "for Matt and future victims of similar tragedies".

Golinski family and friends said yesterday that they knew neither who had created it nor where the money would end up.

It followed the establishment of the Matthew Golinski Recovery Fund, by Matt's business partners and clients from Noosaville-based The Rolling Dolmade, earlier this week.

The ANZ-registered account is the only fund sanctioned by the Golinski family.

The Office of Fair Trading, Facebook and the Commonwealth Bank have been called in to check the foundation's status as a non-profit organisation, the use of Matt's name, images and its unofficial fundraising account.

The family is also seeking legal advice.

Golinski family spokeswoman Trena-Louise Lyons said she believed the creator of the foundation and the relevant Facebook sites was unknown to the family.

"Although the author's intentions may be true, contact has been made with Facebook, the Commonwealth Bank and the Office of Fair Trading," she said.

Rachael Golinski and her daughters Sage, Willow and Starlia died when their Tewantin house burnt to the ground on Boxing Day last month.

Husband and father Matt Golinski survived but suffered third-degree burns to 40% of his body.

He remains in an induced coma in Royal Brisbane Hospital.

The Foundation and bank account creator acknowledged online that the account was not connected to the Golinskis or the ANZ recovery fund previously set up.

It made mention of hopefully raising enough funds to be able to "fund the idea of planting a willow tree with a park bench under it and a plaque with their names".

The Foundation's creator did not respond to questions posted by the Daily yesterday.
