Check before you burn-off
CALL before you light is the message to fire burn-off permit holders as changing weather conditions mean wildfire levels across the state could change in a flash.
Warwick acting station officer Greg Stewart said already this week bans had been put in place and then lifted on the Southern Downs, showing how quickly the situation could change.
"It's dynamic at the moment. We are changing between wild level twos and level threes,' he said.
"Level three is where we can't issue permits and they can't be lit, but that can change with the weather.
"For example, yesterday there was a suspension of all of the permits but in the afternoon that changed and the ban was lifted."
He said it was essential for people with permits to call and register before they lit up but the changing conditions meant it was even more important.
"Anyone who has got a permit, before lighting it, I would be contacting their local fire brigade to find out what level we are on at the moment and to find out if it has been banned," he said.
"They have to contact the centre (Queensland Fire and Rescue Service) when they are going to light them anyway and they should be able to let them know if it has been banned or not."
He said registering meant QFRS could differentiate between permitted burns and other triple-0 calls.
"We currently have large amounts of aircraft flying around the area of Queensland so when they see smoke they will fly down and have a look at the area and find out if it is a permitted burn or not," Mr Stewart said.
"When you don't get a big fire through for a few years there is more fuel on the ground but we can reduce it through hazard-reduction burn-offs."
Permitted Bans
- Call your QFRS on 1800 658 219 to register your burn before lighting it, even if you have a permit.
- Level-three wildfire risk results in a ban on permitted burn-offs.
- Permitted burn-offs have been banned in Central Queensland until Monday, October 10.
