THE KAT-in-the-hat has sold his most prized possession.

Kennedy MP Bob Katter auctioned off his famous Akubra hat at Bridges Cafe and Jazz Bar in Mackay last night.

The hat was bought by the owner of Wade's Tree Services Mackay for $1000.

It was auctioned to fund Katter's Australian Party candidate for Mirani Bevan Pidgeon's campaign. The Akubra Arena hat has a regular retail price of $149.

The American-style hat features a tall, centre-creased western crown and a broad, upswept brim. It's a traditional hat designed for the rodeo circuit rider and features a braided horse hair tail band and satin lining.

Mr Katter said he would not miss it. "I have plenty more hats I can wear, I rotate them around," Mr Katter said.

Mr Katter was in town yesterday with KAP Mackay candidate Lindsay Temple as well as Mr Pidgeon. They also visited Langford's Hotel and Baker's Creek Community Hall for a question and answer forum.

His time in Mackay was easy-going in light of The Court of Appeal's decision to reject his party's application to destroy seven million ballot papers.

Mr Katter said the application had been lodged to dispute the party's abbreviated name of The Australian Party, which had been printed on the ballot papers.

"Since it does not differentiate out or delineate, it is an indeterminate appellation," he said.

"In simple language the Australian Electoral Commission says 'the people' will have no idea who The Australian Party is."
