Cheryl eyes off top fashion prize

MT COOLUM beauty Cheryl Slender wears glasses, but she is no geek.

She feels fashionable, fabulous and confident.

In fact, Miss Slender has been named one of eight finalists in the nationwide Specsavers spectacle wearer of the year competition.

"I'm really excited but nervous. I just found out last Thursday and I was so shocked. I couldn't believe it," she said.

"I have worn glasses since I was 15.

"I love wearing glasses because you can change your look. There are so many different designs."

The finalists are vying for a trip to Los Angeles for a photo shoot with the competition's 2013 ambassador, Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks, and a modelling contract with Australian agency Scoop.

"It would honestly be a dream to go to LA with Christina Hendricks," Miss Slender said.

"I love acting and modelling. It's an interest I always had and to be given that opportunity is a dream."

Miss Slender works for Virgin Airlines but has always been involved in fashion.

She worked as the Lifestyle Show coordinator for International Fashion Week at Palmer Coolum Resort and described her own style as "simple, classic, chic."

"I like to keep it simple, but then accessorise with a pop of colour," she said.

"I currently wear tortoise shell and purple Dolce and Gabbana glasses with bigger frames.

"I like to match the purple and tortoise shell with a big, chunky orange necklace.

"You can mix and match."
