Two-year-old has 'serious injuries' after being hit by car

A TODDLER has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car.

The vehicle was reversing out of a quiet suburban street in Avondale Heights just after 8pm when the two-year-old was struck.

Witnesses in Riverside Avenue told the Herald Sun the child's mother had been driving the car and was beside herself with grief.

The girl was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital on Wednesday night with serious injuries.

One man, who did not want to give his name, said the toddler's frantic father raised the alarm, bashing on doors and asking for them to call for help.

He said a group of neighbours, including another man who was a doctor, raced to help the girl as the parents consoled each other on the nature strip.

"We called an ambulance, came outside and the daughter was bleeding," the man said.

"The girl was there and everyone was around her; the mum and the dad were here and the mum was laying on the ground screaming, like, 'what have I done?' She's so young'."

A woman was on Wednesday night assisting police with their inquiries.
