Accused paedophile extradited to NSW

AN ACCUSED paedophile has been extradited to New South Wales after being arrested in Warwick and appearing in the Magistrates Court.

The 56-year-old man, whose identity has been suppressed by court order, was taken into custody on Tuesday on a warrant and first appeared in court that afternoon.

He was back in court yesterday morning after senior New South Wales detectives arrived in Warwick to seek his formal extradition.

The man will be transported from custody to Brisbane Airport this morning where he will board a flight to Sydney accompanied by police.

The man is alleged to have committed a number of sexual assault offences in a regional NSW community involving his own children from previous relationships.

The first alleged victim, now aged eight, was interviewed by NSW police in January last year.

He was supported in court by his current wife, with the couple having resided in Warwick since last February.

The man applied to be released on bail which was opposed by the NSW detectives who submitted to Magistrate Anne Thacker that he was likely to be a "flight risk".

They also submitted that the man had moved to Warwick less than a month after becoming aware that child sex allegations had been made against him, after police spoke with his wife and one of his children in the NSW town in which they formerly resided.

Duty lawyer Phillip Crook, who appeared for the accused, told Ms Thacker his client and current family had prior plans to re-locate to Warwick before the allegations were aired and the first his client knew about them was on his arrest in Warwick. Her Honour did not accept either submission.

Mr Crook also tried to argue that the man was not "transient" as claimed by police and had resided in his former community since early 2003.

He said if his client were to remain in custody it would place his employment in the Warwick area at risk.

The NSW police took a different view, opposing bail to seek an extradition order.

NSW Detective Senior Sergeant Brennan told the court "within a short period of being informed of the sexual assault allegations" the man re-located to Warwick.

"We ask that bail be refused for the protection and welfare of the victim and the community," Snr Sgt Brennan said.

"In addition to the first complainant there are two other potential victims.

"I ask Your Honour to take into account the seriousness of the alleged offences and that they involve children from previous marriages."

The offences carry a maximum prison term of 20 years in New South Wales.

Magistrate Thacker said she was satisfied the accused was an "unacceptable flight risk" and ordered both that his Queensland bail application be refused and that he be transferred to the custody of the NSW police.

She further ordered that on arrival at Sydney Airport he be taken to the nearest Local Court at Redfern, where he will be formally charged.
