City shoots to cash in
THE Commonwealth Games might not be until 2018, but the brainstorming has already begun for local sporting bodies about how the Rose City could cash in on the huge event.
Warwick's clay target facility is already at Olympic standard and former world champion shooter Greg Newey said it could be useful for training purposes.
Mr Newey said while Warwick had a first-class facility, it would likely be Brisbane's range that is awarded the Commonwealth Games honour.
"We do have an Olympic shooting and trap facility but I wouldn't think any of the (clay target) events would be held here. It's not big enough to hold this sort of event," he said.
"I would anticipate the shooting events would be conducted at the Brisbane complex, which is huge for clay target, pistol and rifle.
"There's no facility at the Gold Coast and it wouldn't warrant setting one up that wouldn't be used again."
Having competed in the World Championships and various international tournaments, Mr Newey is well across what it takes to run a successful, large event such as the Commonwealth Games.
Speaking from Brisbane where he was training for an international shoot today, Mr Newey said there would likely be a flow-on effect in the weeks leading up to the Games.
"We may be able to have some lead-up events to give some visitors who come early to make use of our facility - that could be a possibility," he said.
"It could well be there might be some smaller nations come and spend a week training at our facility in the lead-up. We're only two hours away.
"I'd say there would also be business and tourist flow-on advantages too.
"But it is seven years away, so it's a long time. I would think there would be some interest, but it just depends on what (the organisers) need.
"The Brisbane facility is very good and there are already plans to improve it further - but it really is a world-class facility and probably the best shooting set-up in Australia in my experience."
Meanwhile, other shooting clubs are also thinking about what they could offer during the Commonwealth Games.
The annual general meeting of Queensland Pistol Shooting will take place this weekend, where it is expected talk about how local clubs could become involved will take place.
