Civic Centre remains on track to reopen in new year
STANTHORPE'S Civic Centre is still expected to reopen by January 1 next year, according to Southern Downs Regional Council.
Since it was significantly damaged by fire in March, the council has worked hard to restore the asset, manager for community services and major projects Michael Bell said.
Mr Bell said contractors MBC Constructions were working on restoring the building.
"Unfortunately council didn't receive any tenders from Stanthorpe-based contractors for this work,” he said.
Works taking place over the next few weeks include changes to doorways on the Lock St side, changes to the Lock St ramp to provide compliant accessibility and changes to the main pathway on Marsh St to the council's Administration Building.
Mr Bell said internal works were progressing well and included the replacement of the commercial kitchen, installation of the new suspended ceiling, replacement of the damaged timber flooring and installation of new stage curtains. New ducted air-conditioning will be installed within the main auditorium and supper room. Council will also install an automated smoke detection and alarm system.
