Civic centre to open in new year
THE new-look Stanthorpe Civic Centre, due to be completed at the start of January has had its completion date pushed back.
The building has been closed since March when a fire gutted its kitchen, and is now expected to be opened by January 26.
Asbestos removal and the stripping back of interior damage has been required as part of extensive restoration works.
Southern Downs Regional Council community services and major projects manager Michael Bell said the date had been pushed back due to the need to replace most of the centre's timber flooring.
"There was an initial possibility the flooring in the main auditorium would recover from the water used to extinguish the fire but this unfortunately has not been the case,” Mr Bell said.
"The main auditorium flooring will now be replaced with a similar hardwood.
"It does unfortunately mean the timeframe of the project has been extended, due to the availability of the timber but it will have a positive impact on the long term future of this community asset.”
Mr Bell said contractors were working hard to progress the restoration of the building. Completed works include a new framework in the foyer ceiling and internal walls; installation of insulation to the ceiling; and replacement of electrical wiring and sound equipment.
The kitchen has also had its roof raised and the timber floor has been completely replaced in the supper room.
"We now have a new footpath to enter the building from Marsh St to meet accessibility requirements, and plumbing work has been done to the external disabled access toilet,” Mr Bell said.
"The wiring for the new automated smoke detection and alarm system is also currently being installed.
"Upgraded heating will not only ensure comfort to civic centre users, but will help reduce energy use and cost.”
