Civil unions a step in the right direction

THE marriage equality issue has again been thrust into the spotlight this week.

Firstly with our sudden change in Prime Minister hopes have been lifted that same-sex couples could soon be given the right to marry. Or at least, that the people will be given a voice and a chance to cast their vote on the matter.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has also become a big player in the debate, with the Queensland Premier yesterday announcing plans to introduce civil partnerships.

Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg has condemned the move and questioned Ms Palaszczuk's priorities.

Mr Springborg said there were more pressing issues for the state's leader to be concerned with. While there is undoubtedly a multitude of issues our state's leader is focused on, it is disappointing to see Mr Springborg show such disregard for such an important one.

This is a Bill that will give more legal certainty to couples and will be a positive step in the move to deliver equality to same-sex couples.

Removing discrimination from our society and giving all Queenslanders the right and dignity of being able to choose the person they marry is an incredibly important issue and is one our politicians - irrespective of their position on the topic - should consider important.

Congratulations to Ms Palaszczuk for instigating change on such a significant issue.
