Clare McMeniman to retire from netball later this year

NETBALL: The Southern Downs has been rocked by a second major announcement within a week about our national level netballers.

On Thursday night, Queensland Firebirds vice-captain and Warwick West State School past student Clare McMeniman announced she will not play in the National Netball League in 2017 and retire after the forthcoming Constellation Cup series.

Earlier in the week, McMeniman's defensive partner and former Allora student Laura Geitz announced she was taking an indefinite break from the sport to start a family.

Warwick Netball Association secretary Linda Bunch said Warwick players were sorry to see her announce her retirement.

"We are sorry to see her go. Clare is a fantastic player and extremely positive role model," Bunch said.

"I thought she should have made the Australian team a lot earlier than she did."

Her leadership ability was recognised as she has been selected to captain Australia in three series, one last year in the United Kingdom, this year in Tests in New Zealand and Australia and now in the Constellation Cup against New Zealand.

McMeniman has won three ANZ Championship titles with the Queensland Firebirds.

She plays at goal defence and wing defence after making her first regional team while a student at Warwick West State School.
