Clare to lead Australia on home soil for first time

NETBALL: Former Warwick West State School student Clare McMeniman will captain Australia for the first time on home soil when she leads the Diamonds out against England Roses at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre at 7.48pm tomorrow.

McMeniman, 31, will be playing her 10th Test for Australia, breaking into the team in a comeback after a season out of the game.

She debuted for Australia under captain and former Allora student Laura Geitz and is now captaining the team for the second series while Geitz is being rested.

Such is the selectors' confidence in McMeniman that she is only the seventh most capped player in the team but is the captain.

McMeniman first captained Australia on a tour to the United Kingdom last year and was captain late last week when Australia scored a victory against South Africa.

Geitz is expected to return for the second lot of internationals this year and the odds are the longtime friends from the Southern Downs will again combine in Australian colours.

The Australian Diamonds opened their Netball Quad Series campaign with a convincing 68-43 victory against South Africa Spar Proteas in Auckland.

McMeniman was upbeat about the win after a game where she started at goal defence and then moved to wing defence.
