Clash of the titans in TRL Cup final
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Wattles Warriors will be chasing their second Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy win in four years in the Toowoomba Rugby League A-grade competition on Sunday afternoon.
The game against Valleys will be played at Herb Steinohrt Oval, the home ground of Valleys.
It is played annually between the two leading teams at the end of the first round, 11 weeks of footy.
The day will certainly be an eye-opener for the Wattles high-achieving younger troops as they run on in a game that boasts 38 years of tradition.
But for seasoned Wattles performers Matt and Ryan Duggan, they've done it all before.
Matt has two Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy winner's medallions, one with Wattles and another with Valleys.
The brothers, both regular Toowoomba Clydesdales representatives, are names very familiar in TRL league circles.
Ryan, 35, is A-grade co-captain and was the Wattles 2017 Player of the Year.
Younger brother Matt has won player of the year and player of the final awards galore and played half for the Queensland Rangers last season.
Both played significant roles in the Wattles' two most recent Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy appearances in 2014 and 2015.
While the Wattles won the TRL A-grade premiership in both seasons, the 2014 Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy headed to the Lockyer Valley after an historic win by the Gatton Hawks.
After excelling in their junior league years with Souths in Toowoomba before joining Valleys and tasting premiership success, the Duggan brothers have been a part of the Wattles for six years.
The Duggan family has a long association stretching back generations with the Allora area, deep in Wattles heartland.
Their grandparents Pat and Irene Duggan raised a family at Hendon where their father Gerry grew up. Their mother Debbie is originally from Clifton. Their father played footy for Allora and later Allora/Clifton (Wattles).
Tomorrow's trophy final will be a clash of the titans given Valleys and Wattles have dominated the TRL top grade competition to the halfway point of the 2018 season.
Valleys took full advantage of an undermanned Wattles outfit early in the season winning 34-12. The Duggan brothers and a number teammates were at Matt's wedding that weekend to former Wattles ambassador Tarla Brennan.
The punters have the Wattles starting as underdogs.
