Class shows in squash a decade apart as new champs crowned
SQUASH: Two squash players have won Warwick Rose Squash Club singles championships more than a decade after their last wins.
Frank Lo Giudice won his first men's title after winning in 2005 and 2007.
He represented Darling Downs and Queensland at junior level before beating all comers to win his two championships.
"I remember beating Jim Costello in one final,” he said.
Lo Giudice had five seasons off before returning to club fixtures in the past two seasons.
Zoe Cox represented Darling Downs when a student at Lockyer District State High School before moving with her family to the Southern Downs.
She has regularly played club squash other than around the time when her children, now 16 and 13, were born.
Cox has played in two finals 10 years apart and won both, 2008 and 2018.
Husband and wife team Stuart and Michelle Anderson both made the championship finals before going down in four sets.
While Lo Giudice plays club fixtures on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, Cox is a regular at women's Thursday night squash.
Now that all Warwick squash is under the umbrella of the Warwick Rose Squash Club, players from the women's competition are welcome to play in club championships.
Last season, Cox was in the Warwick-based Scotland team that won the women's premiership.
The first season premiership in Warwick squash was won by the Pelicans team of Stuart Anderson, Len Don, Brooke Price, Mark Sinnott, Isaac Johnson and state cricket and polocrosse representative Carly Cooper.
Line winners were Frank Lo Giudice, Lucas Gillott, Jonno Colfs, Sean Bryson, Laura Babbington and Carly Cooper
THE Warwick Rose Squash Club is organising teams for its second season competition.
A muster was held this week and another will be held at the St Mary's Squash Courts on Tuesday night. All welcome.
Club president Lucas Gillott said the club played fixtures each Tuesday and Wednesday night on the two courts at St Mary's and could cater for up to eight teams.
"It looks like we might have six teams playing on six lines this season,” he said.
Junior coaching with Len Don and Cameron Darton each Monday from 3.30pm. After starting as juniors, players are welcome to move up to senior squash. More players keen on fixtures can call Gillott on 0413330559.
